PETER ACKROYD’S THAMES

Millennium Bridge

The exhibition sits on the Millennium Bridge, designed by Arup, Foster and Partners, Bisset Adams, Wordsalad, with Peter Ackroyd. The West side of the bridge will deal with all that is ‘noble’ and the East side of the bridge will deal with the ‘darker’ side of the Thames.

WORLD CUP 2006 STADIA

SmithField House

Exhibition by the German Detail magazine on designs for new stadia for the World Cup 2006 including Herzog de Meuron’s Bayern Munich ground as well as refurbished building. A screen will provide live coverage of matches from Germany.

This exhibition, designed by thomas matthews will seek to demonstrate current architectural activity in Southwark with work by major international figures. It will show buildings of significance and seek to tell the story of the area’s heritage and development.

EYE DREAM

Fish and Coal Offices, King's Cross

An Exhibition resulting from a residency, by Minnie Weicz, in the Coal and Fish Offices on the King’s Cross Development site. Transforming the building into a camera-obscura, images of the changing King’s cross terrain were observed by the building and recorded on photographic paper.

AGORA: CITIES FOR PEOPLE

The Agora London team, from Central Saint Martins, studied a route from the Globe Theatre and Tate Modern along the South Bank westwards over Hungerford Bridge towards Trafalgar Square. The exhibition illustrates this three year research project concerned with the planning and sustainability of the urban environment.

VIVACITY: URBAN SUSTAINABILITY FOR THE 24 HOUR CITY

VivaCity is part of the Sustainable Urban Environment (SUE) action research programme funded by the Engineering & Physical Science Research Council with the ODPM and Housing Corporation. Following an intensive case study based in and around Clerkenwell the key themes include mixed use and quality of life; street and property crime; amenities (WCs!); environmental quality (noise, pollution) and housing design. ARCHITECTS IN PUBLIC TOILETS

Public toilets along the Biennale walk route.

This installation, by Architects in Residence, involves decorating toilet cubicles including wallpapering and installing a series of objects, which relate to the domestic toilet, i.e. crocheted toilet brush holders, lampshades and pink splash mats in order to re-evaluate the harsh internal environment of most facilities.

A sandy beach will be created replete with deck chairs, ice cream vans and donkey rides. This project aims to change people's perception of the City and the way they behave in it. It will also change the typical city environment in the summer months to a place many would rather be.

The installation will use reclaimed materials to create an abstract shelter that inhabits the public square by responding to the roads and various views to create an improved public place. The participants will be engaged in constructing, designing and inhabiting the installation as it develops through the course of the week.

An installation by Angela Wright to consist of a white carpet of unfired porcelain pieces. The pieces are stacked together, supporting each other and have echoes of a city/landscape or a thrown down fleece. The carpet will produce a luminous white floor in the gloom.

A temporary art installation in a classic K6 red telephone box. The K6 was designed by Gilbert Scott and based on Sir John Soane's tomb in nearby St Pancras Gardens. London Borough of Camden and Model Citizen

FILM AND VIDEO INSTALLATIONS

TRANSIT, A NEW FILM BY EMILY RICHARDSON.

Over the last year Emily Richardson has been researching the shifting architectural and social landscape of the East End of London. transit is a three screen film projection hidden within the only original vaults left under smithfield market. Exploring themes of people and place, the film will be experimental in form and will capture something of the changes taking place.

FILLING UP / EMPTYING

A site specific video installation. The video will be projected onto the front window of a shop front along the route and will be most visible from early evening. The installation will create an illusion of the space within the shop filling up with water and then draining away. A sound element will also be incorporated.

BRING BACK THE FRONT DOOR

While the public realm and outdoor spaces generally are being improved around London, people have forgotten the front garden area. Home owners seem to turn their back on the front to accommodate cars and rubbish bins and have created a blight in our residential streets.

The LAB06 walk route is approximately equal to 60% of the government recommendation that we walk 10,000 steps each day. The Looking with your Feet project, provides the remaining 40% along the Historic Town Trail, which is marked on Clerkenwell’s pavements.

GATES OF THE CITY

Secondary school students from the local area will work with architects to create designs for the interior tunnels of a viaduct in Southwark. The competition will raise awareness of the way design integrates with public spaces.

ARCHITECTURAL COMPETITION PUBLIC CONVENIENCES

Southwark Council will run a design competition in conjunction with an architectural journal to explore the potential for redevelopment of two disused public toilets. The objective is to celebrate the architectural possibilities of both sites and raise the profile of architecture in the borough concurring with the Biennale’s theme of change.
